Vermont Humanities Snapshot Series: Dare to Dream

April 3 @ 6:00pm-7:30pm

Actor David Mills portrays Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. surmounting his early uncertainties and transforming into a world-renowned civil rights icon. Be reawakened and elevated with highlights from Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” “I Have a Dream,” and “Promised Land.”

This event will take place in person at the Manchester Community Library and will also be available for live streaming. All attendees are strongly encouraged to register using the link below, but virtual attendees must register to receive the link to the program.

About the Presenter

Mr. Mills holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College in creative writing. As am actor, he has performed the works of Dr. King and Langston Hughes for almost two decades. He also lived in Langston Hughes’ landmark Harlem home for three years (and was a recipient of the Langston Hughes Society Award). He has published four poetry collections: The Dream Detective, The Sudden Country, After Mistic and Boneyarn—the first book of poems about slavery in New York City and winner of the North American Book Award. His poems have appeared in Ploughshares, Colorado Review, Crab Orchard Review, Jubilat, Poetry Daily, The Common, Brooklyn Rail, Worcester Review, Rattapallax, The Literary Review and Fence. He has received fellowships and grants from Breadloaf, the New York Foundation for the Arts (2023, ’05), the New York State Council on the Arts, the Mellon Foundation, the American Antiquarian Society, the Schomburg Center Library, the Queens Council on the Arts, Flushing Town Hall, the Brooklyn Non-Fiction Prize and the Pan-African Literary Forum. He wrote the audio script for Reflections in Black:100 Years of Black Photography, an exhibition which showed at the Whitney and Getty Museums. The Juilliard School produced a play Mr. Mills wrote. He has recorded his poetry on ESPN and RCA Records and has had poems displayed at the Venice Biennale.
