Northshire Bookstore – An Evening of Gratitude with James Crews and Kristi Nelson – The Wonder of Small Things, Wake up Grateful

October 27, 2023 @ 6:00pm-7:00pm

This is an in person event at our Manchester, VT store!

Join us for an evening of gratitude with acclaimed poet James Crews, and Kristi Nelson, the executive director of A Network for Grateful Living. The two authors will share work to inspire gratitude and create a spirit of peace and renewal.

Crews presents an all-new collection of highly accessible poems on the theme of celebrating moments of wonder and peace in everyday life. As he writes in the introduction: “[A] deep love for the world is present in every one of the poems gathered in this book. Wonder calls us back to the curiosity we are each born with, and it makes us want to move closer to what sparks our attention. Wonder opens our senses and helps us stay in touch with a humbling sense of our own human smallness in the face of unexpected beauty and the delicious mysteries of life on this planet.”

In times of uncertainty and suffering, finding joy and gratefulness in daily life is challenging. Wake Up Grateful provides a practical and inspiring roadmap to making grateful living a daily practice, with guiding principles, reflective questions, affirmations, and exercises. Drawing from her own cancer experience along with her life work with The Network for Grateful Living, Kristi Nelson explores how to develop gratefulness as a way of being. She examines ten core areas where many people need support and guides readers in finding presence and perspective in these aspects of life, opening to greater possibilities, and uncovering the abundance and love that’s possible in every moment.

James Crews is the editor of the best-selling anthologies The Path to Kindness and How to Love the World, which have been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, in the Boston Globe, and the Washington Post. His poems have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Ploughshares, The New Republic, and The Christian Century. He collaborated with former US poet laureate Ted Kooser on “American Life in Poetry,” which reaches millions of readers across the world. Crews holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a PhD in writing and literature from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He teaches poetry at the University at Albany and lives with his husband in Shaftsbury, Vermont.

Kristi Nelson is the author of Wake Up Grateful and the executive director of A Network for Grateful Living. She has a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School and has spent more than 30 years in nonprofit leadership, development, and consulting. She has worked at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, and the Soul of Money Institute. Nelson is a Stage IV cancer survivor who cherishes living among friends and family in western Massachusetts.
