Give the Gift of Vermont
All I want is a little bit of Vermont…
While the Green Mountains are famous for iconic products like maple syrup and cheddar cheese, those are just the tip of the iceberg. Today’s Vermont marketplace offers innovative, irresistible provisions in every genre…food, drink, art, and craft, plus authentic, memorable experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Our holiday gift guide is a local sampler dedicated to Made in Vermont. Discover small surprises, big ideas, and a few in between choices for under the tree.
To Tuck in a Stocking
Our picks for tiny and shiny, right here in MVT.
For your favorite foodie.
Sneak one or two of these custom balsamics into the sock of your favorite foodie or chef! You’ll find them at Olive & Ives, a locally-owned boutique and tasting center located in the Green Mountain Village Shops. Choose Honey & Ginger for a gentle, spicy heat or Blenheim Apricot, which is sweet & tart with an intense honeysuckle aroma. While you’re there, browse Melissa’s full selection of infused oils, aged balsamics, sea salts, and (just in case you need an “under the tree”) gorgeous ready-to-go gift bags and baskets.
For your best gal or gal pal.
In 2003, Kerry O’Brien left her big-deal, big-city PR position to start Commando, a South Burlington-based company that creates Made in the USA undergarments that are as popular on the runway as in and around town. Whether foxy, glitzy, emoji or more, her pieces are practical, comfortable, and luxurious. Find these irresistible undies, camis, and more at JOY All Things Underthings on Main Street.
Be the “hard to shop for” HERO.
We all have those people on our holiday list that literally have everything. For them, gift a “dinner date” at their favorite local spot or surprise them with a splurge that they can file away for a special occasion! Check out delicious, elegant options here on our site and call ahead for gift cards or certificates.
Hello, Holiday Bling.
Confession time. When it comes to stockings, we go BIG. We fill them with chocolates, goodies, gadgets, and more. But, tucked down in a toe, there’s nothing better than a sweet little box all wrapped up with a bow. Visit Zippy Chicks and browse Ellen’s selection of soul-stirring pieces from local artists like Deb Fanelli, above.
For Under the Tree
Vermont’s finest will not disappoint.
VT in your kitchen.
From the proprietors of New England’s most famous country store, a gorgeous book filled with more than five generations of authentic family recipes, regional history, and local lore. User-friendly and a pleasure to browse, it will bring you and yours to the heart of Vermont with every dish you make. Find it in the cookbook section at Northshire Bookstore.
Keep them Cozy.
Founded in 1842, the family-owned Johnson Woolen Mills makes the winter apparel Vermont is famous for. Here in town, Heinel’s Clothiers stocks their Jac shirts, flannels, woolen pants, and more. Practical, perfect gifts…for peeps who brave the elements and want to look good doing it or for city folk who dig that woodsy winter style.
Handsome & Handmade
From her studio at the foot of Andover’s Terrible Mountain, Susan Leader creates her line of “Vermont Lodge Pottery.” Every piece is unique, hand-thrown and hand-sponged, and inspired by the seasons. Long Ago and Far Away curates an extensive collection of Leader’s plates and cups and bowls and platters. When you visit, pick them up and hold them in your hands. Choose the one that speaks to you.
For the Littles
Stephen Huneck’s charming tales are a welcome addition to your family library. Light-hearted stories inspired by the artist’s black lab, Sally, are accompanied by original woodblock prints. We love this one, Sally Goes to the Beach. If you’re closer to the coast than VT, look for Sally Goes to the Mountains. Or, for the holidays, Sally’s Snow Adventure. Chances are you’ll find one or more upstairs at Northshire Books.
A Universal Favorite.
Mother Myrick’s Buttercrunch is made from scratch right here in Manchester and popular the whole world over. Irresistible toffee centers are dipped in milk or dark chocolate, then rolled in freshly roasted crushed cashews and almonds! Plus, every piece is crafted with award-winning “Best of Class” Vermont Cabot Creamery butter. This is a gift that never disappoints. Unless you don’t buy a big enough box.
Too Big to Wrap
Gifts so enormous they’ll last a lifetime.
Go Big or Go Home.
If you’ve got an adventurer on your gift list, treat them to a Land Rover Driving Experience. With expert guides, they’ll tackle course terrain or off-road trails in a lesson customized to their comfort level and ability. When we polled students of the Manchester course, they said it was BOSS. Like no other. We think you can’t lose with this one.
We love a Staycation.
Maybe the thing to flip your sweetheart’s switch would be an unexpected staycation surprise? Consider a cozy private cabin, a gorgeous Airbnb, a hip new hotel, or an iconic New England resort. Or, escape to one of our totally charming inns or b&bs. Take a look at your options here online and make arrangements in advance for the perfect way to package it.
Inspiration for the ages.
When we asked local gallerist Lisa Helmholz-Adams to pick one work from her winter show that fit our gift list criteria, she suggested dreamy Blue Forest, Dorset VT by 21st century mixed media artist Stephen Schaub. As if Schaub’s grandiose scale and use of rare handmade papers aren’t enough, his techniques are proprietary and completely his own. Every step of his process to make a “one of one” piece is completed at his studio here in Vermont.
Who can refuse a day of pampering at a top notch spa like the Equinox? Choose from a host of signature treatments. Maybe a “Mountain Man” facial designed just for him, or a Reiki session to promote balance and energy. For her, an Abhyanga Massage with warm Ayurveda oil or a souped up, special mani-pedi. Plus, the 75-foot heated indoor pool surrounded by mountain views. So you can give the gift of bliss.
Give the Gift of Live Theatre
While we’re just a tiny town tucked away between the mountains, we’re also home to performing arts venues that rival any you’ll find in a major city. We have three amazing options within a half-hour drive. Just next door, the Dorset Theatre Festival presents bold and innovative works in a picturesque village setting. Up the hill in charming Weston, you’ll find the region’s oldest program, 81 years young, producing stage classics, major musicals, family-friendly events, and a hilarious cabaret…on three stages, soon to be year-round. And down Route 7A, you’ll find the intimate stage of Oldcastle Theatre Company, a leading force in Bennington’s cultural revival. Give a certificate for the 2017 season at any of these treasures and you’ll have the time of your life. We promise!
Enough to fill a sizable sleigh.
Of course, we’ve only included a handful of gifts on our list. There’s awesome gear at The Mountain Goat, gorgeous crafts at Epoch Gallery and Hot Glass. There’s Orvis, Al Ducci’s, Vermont Kitchen Supply, and more! Plus, the forty awesome storefronts from MDO. The Magic Sleigh, Fortuna Sausage, Manchester Wood, and on. Take some time to stroll through town. Enjoy the day treating the ones you love. Know we’re grateful and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
