With more than 100 members and a recently celebrated centennial anniversary, the Garden Club of Manchester (GCM) has long played a vital role in preserving the beauty and character of Manchester and Dorset. Through its many projects, the Club helps ensure these communities remain as picturesque as the Green Mountains themselves—reflecting Vermont’s natural splendor and enduring New England charm. Its membership is a vibrant mix of Master Gardeners, skilled floral designers, enthusiastic beginners, and dedicated, community-minded neighbors.
GCM’s contributions are woven throughout community life. The Club sponsors and maintains numerous beautification initiatives, including the Factory Point Town Green and the Dorset Village Green, as well as seasonal plantings and holiday decorations for public buildings. Members are also actively revitalizing the Boswell Trail at Southern Vermont Arts Center, transforming it into an engaging, educational walk that introduces visitors of all ages to the region’s forests and plant life. In addition, GCM supports local stewardship efforts through regular participation in Green-Up Days, helping to keep public spaces clean and welcoming.
Recognizing the importance of both education and community engagement, the Club hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Signature fundraisers include the Holiday Bazaar, the Spring Plant, Bake and Tag Sale, and the popular biennial Tour of Private Gardens—all of which support the Club’s beautification and scholarship programs. The biennial Flower Show is another highlight, showcasing the creativity and horticultural expertise of GCM members. GCM also hosts Junior Gardeners and Senior programs at area assisted living venues. Every year, we host a scholarship for area graduating high school students who will major in academic areas aligned with environmental sciences, sustainability and botany. At its heart, the Garden Club of Manchester is defined by its welcoming spirit. For many newcomers to the Northshire area, it serves as a first step toward connection and community. Monthly meetings often feature guest experts who share insights, demonstrate techniques, and inspire gardeners of all levels. Several times a year, these programs are opened to the public at no cost, extending the Club’s knowledge and enthusiasm well beyond its membership.
