Join Manchester Historical Society curator Shawn Harrington for a look at the early years of the Southern Vermont Artists, the men and women whose works make up the core of “For the Love of Vermont, The Lyman Orton Collection” on display now at the Manchester Community Library and Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier, VT.
Their works make up the “Golden Era,” from about 1910-1970, when many artists lived in our community whether for a period of time or a lifetime. The landscapes and streetscapes they created captured a different time in our history, and convey a spirit not always felt by looking at a photograph.
August 8th, 4PM
Before the talk, Lyman Orton and Anita Rafael will be at the library signing copies of the book For the Love of Vermont
It’s the story of how the proprietor of The Vermont Country Store endeavored over the past forty-five years to retain and repatriate the art of Vermont in his home state. The collection Lyman Orton has built is the most extensive private collection of Vermont fine art by men and women who either already lived here, traveled to Vermont seasonally, or eventually made Vermont their home. All 220 pages are colorfully illustrated, with 107 works of art representing 56 artists who truly captured the Vermont way of life and expressed their love of Vermont.
