The Palestine-Israel Conflict: or, Sisyphus Had a Sinecure

August 4, 2020 @ 5:30pm-7:00pm

Date: Tuesday, August 4, 2020

Time: 5:30 pm-7:00 pm

Location: via Zoom

Fee: $10 in advance

The Palestine-Israel conflict is not the deadliest—the Syrian War has killed more than 400,000 in ten years—but, more than a century old, it is one of the oldest, and, having stubbornly outlasted more than 20 international efforts to resolve it, perhaps the most intractable.  Examining the deep, broad and densely tangled root causes of the conflict, and the decisions, policies and often violent actions on both sides that have exacerbated it, this talk will try to explain why this conflict has been so resistant to resolution. It will also ask if there’s good reason to believe that, short of a cataclysm, perhaps the virtual annihilation of one side or the other, it will ever be resolved at all. Having lived in Israel through the last 50 years of this madness, Dr. Freedman will speak a little, but only a little, about his personal experience of and feelings about it.
