Students with all levels of experience are welcome to join Portrait Painting. Instruction will be given through demos and one-on-one guidance. Students will learn to create a likeness by simplifying the form of the head, using value to create form, understanding the simple anatomy of the face and head, depicting the individuality of the subject, and using a limited palette to learn to balance cool and warm colors. Chalice will teach in oils, but students are welcome to paint in acrylic if they prefer.

Palette (Chalice uses an old cookie sheet; glass or wood is more typical)
Mineral spirits (linseed oil and other solvents are optional)
Glass jar
A variety of brushes
Palette knife (useful but optional)
Paper towels or rags
Paints
Titanium white
Yellow ochre
Vermillion or Napthol Scarlet or Cad Red Light
Alizarin crimson
Ultramarine blue
Burnt umber
Ivory black
Any other colors you happen to have and like
