This is a four-day workshop for high school students who have a strong interest in art.
Day 1: Paint a still life. A demonstration will focus on color mixing, values, composition, and honing visual skills. Medium of choice.
Day 2: Create a collage in the morning and a drawing in the afternoon. The morning will explore the use of interesting shapes, layering, repetition of forms, patterns, colors, and complexity in order to create a work of art that presents a concept. The afternoon will focus on traditional perspective in preparation for Day 3 as well as atmospheric perspective and an in-depth study of values. Participants will paint a minimum of two small images, one which includes/presents geometric perspective and one which illustrates atmospheric perspective. Medium of choice.
.
Day 3: Today we will play with geometry. In the morning, participants will create architectural
structures using foam core and hot glue. In the afternoon we will follow up with a focus on
value differences and perspective, practicing what was learned on Day two by creating 2D images
based on the structures created. Medium is a choice of collage, drawing, painting.
Day 4: We will focus on the human form. Attendees can bring in photos or magazine
images, or use the art books in the classroom to find images of people they would like to
interpret in their own ways. During the morning, we will go over portraiture and human proportions,
as well as effective ways of incorporating figures in an image. Participants can use medium of
choice to complete an interesting 2D figurative work of art.
