La diversité linguistique: le français du Québec et de Louisiane (Linguistic Diversity: the French of Quebec and Louisiana)

October 25, 2022 @ 12:00pm-1:30pm

Free

How and why does the French spoken in Quebec and Louisiana differ from the “standard” French spoken in France? In this presentation, we will explore some of the unique linguistic features (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, etc.) of Quebecois and Cajun French. We will also discuss some of the sociolinguistic factors that play a role in the preservation of both dialects, analyzing the different challenges that each faces.

Comment et pourquoi est-ce que le français qui est parlé au Québec et en Louisiane se diffère du français “standard” qu’on parle en France? Dans cette présentation, nous allons explorer des caractéristiques linguistiques (la prononciation, le vocabulaire, la grammaire, etc.) propres au français québécois et “cajun.” Ensuite, nous allons discuter des facteurs sociolinguistiques qui jouent un rôle dans la préservation de chaque dialecte, en analysant les défis différents auxquels chacun fait face.

This presentation will be given primarily in French.
