Jane Austen on Page and on Screen with Barry Deitz

December 16, 2025 @ 5:30pm-7:00pm
Free

Join presenter Barry Deitz to look at the different ways the novels of Jane Austen have been adapted into feature-length films since the 1940s.  Over the past 80 years, many actors, writers, and directors have approached these classic stories in many ways, some staying faithful to the original storylines and others finding new ways to present them to a new generation.  The program will look at these productions and at what they tell us about how the world of Jane Austen never loses its fascination.  We keep coming back to these great novels and finding something new every time.

Presenter Bio

Originally from North Carolina, I moved to Massachusetts in 2013.  I have been the director at the Conant Public Library in Winchester since December 2021. Over the years I have been a book and film reviewer, a radio and television host, and have traveled all over New England presenting literary programs on everything from the Transcendentalists of Concord to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and the Gardens of Emily Dickinson.  I recently presented a Halloween program on The Vampire in Art and Literature at Fiddleheads Art Gallery in Northfield, Ma.   In North Carolina, I hosted the weekly movie review show Meet Me at the Movies on the local cable channel and wrote book and movie reviews for the Shelby Star daily newspaper.
