Horses have long held a place in Manchester’s story. Today, we think of them mostly for recreation and sport, but for the town’s earliest settlers, they were an essential partner in daily life, once enough land had been cleared in our mountain valley to sustain them. From farm and field to stage and mill, horses powered Manchester’s growth, and their role was significant enough that Vermont became one of the first states to pass laws against cruelty to horses and other working animals.
This illustrated talk, presented by Shawn Harrington of the Manchester Historical Society, will explore this rich history with fascinating photographs that show just how deeply horses were woven into the fabric of everyday life.
We are also proud to feature Dorset Equine Rescue Board Member Lori Berger, who will share the story of the Dorset Equine Rescue, our mission, and the meaningful work we do every day to provide a safe and loving sanctuary for neglected and abused horses.
This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with local history, honor the remarkable contributions of horses, and discover how your support helps The Dorset Equine Rescue provide a safe and loving sanctuary for neglected and abused horses—while also nurturing the organization’s growth and future.
