Merck Forest

When the weather turns cold and snow is on the ground, it’s the perfect season for a sleigh ride! Merck Forest’s Sweetheart Sleigh seats two adults for a 45-minute tour through the forest and around the farm. On a clear day, you’ll take in wonderful views of the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Book at least 24 hours in advance so they can prepare the horses (Mae & June!) and groom the trails. Tips: Come dressed for the cold (think layers, hat, gloves, snow boots, snow coat). The temperature at Merck is often chillier than down in the valleys. Wool blankets are provided for extra warmth, and hot drinks and a cozy fire are available at the Visitor Center when you finish.

In addition to winter sleigh rides, you can camp overnight — they rent rustic cabins. Plus, you can cross-country ski or snowshoe their well-marked and maintained trails. Trek across easy-to-moderate, family-friendly terrain or pursue more challenging paths; there’s more than thirty miles of trail to choose from! Staff can help you plan your route through the forest, around the farm, and past beautiful views of the Taconic and Adirondack Mountains.

"They have an education center for children and Maple Syrup operation in the spring but the real draw is their trails through the forest. A variety of trails of moderate to easy difficulty. When we went there was not much snow but we went after a small snowfall and were the only tracks on the trail other than deer, bobcat, and turkey. Really pleasant place of quiet and solitude in the forest. Great for all ages, young and not so young, especially if you like the outdoors"
